A person understood to be a forestry worker has been killed in an incident at a forestry block in Tinui.
The Tinui Rural Fire Party were called to the site on Te Mai Rd between Tanawa Rd and Pakowai Tinui Rd at 1.05pm today.
Early reports are that the death was in a Forest Enterprises block.
Masterton Senior Sergeant Mike Sutton said initial reports to police were that a man had been killed by a falling tree.
The age and identity of the person is yet to be released.
It is not yet known if they were local to the area.
Police would be working with WorkSafe to investigate the death, Mr Sutton said.
Principal rural fire officer Phill Wishnowsky said a Masterton fire crew and two ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
A Life Flight Westpac Rescue Helicopter also attended, despite wind gusts of 160km/h, Mr Wishnowsky said.
The firefighters would be offered counselling as part of standard procedures, he said.
"We are making sure that they have the support that they need at a time like this."
