Call centre work Auckland's top job pick

Job ads for call centre staff in Auckland attracted the biggest number of applicants, according to online employment sites.

The position was more popular on both Trade Me and Seek.co.nz in Auckland than any other job between July and September.

The ad on Seek.co.nz that pulled in the second-highest number of applications was for a retail assistant followed by an administrative assistant, IT support and help desk and sales representative.

Trade Me's second-most popular ad was for wait staff, followed by a machine operator role, kitchen staff and telesales.

Trade Me head of jobs Peter Osborne said the five jobs most often applied for were at the lower end of the salary scale.

"This is understandable given that lower-skilled roles tend to attract more applicants on Trade Me Jobs and beyond," he said.

Overall, the company had seen a drop in the number of applications in the last quarter compared to the same period last year. Mr Osborne said that made it slightly easier for those on the hunt.

Seek.co.nz general manager Janet Faulding said the popularity of call centre, retail and administrative assistant roles could be down to an increased number of Year 12 and 13 students looking for work when they finished school at the end of the year.
