"Except for one in Cambridge I have done all my half marathons in Tauranga as I like to support local events," he said.
Mr Clout finished in 1 hr 58 minutes - 20 minutes behind his 25 year-old son Max.
"I was pretty happy with that time as my goal was to come in under two minutes," he said.
"It was a really good course. Nice and flat apart from a few steps around Mauao and the weather couldn't have been better."
Mr Clout said he hoped this event would become another flagship occasion for the city in a few years.
"People were clearly having a thoroughly good time, including me, and I am looking forward to competing again next year."
Mr Clout said there was nothing better to clear the cobwebs away and enhancing his physical and mental fitness than running half marathons.
Jane Moore, 46, from Wellington, competed in the 10km race just five months after undergoing a hip replacement.
Miss Moore said she was diagnosed with arthritis in her left hip seven years ago, and was told she might need to have a hip replacement within a year.
Determined to not see that happen so soon, she took up competing in triathlons and the "crazy" sport of ultra-distance running about four years ago.
Miss Moore competed in the Taupo half ironman last year.
She did not find the Tauranga 10km race too tough as the weather was "great" and she had a friend who competed with a baby on her back running alongside her.
"I loved every single minute of it. It's an awesome event. This is my first visit to Tauranga and it's an amazing place. I'll definitely be back next year for sure," Miss Moore said.
Event manager Kezia Trask said the goal to attract at least 1500 entrants was achieved, but not all those who registered turned up on the day.
"But given this is the first year we have held this event the organisers are really happy with the turnout and the fantastic feedback," she said.
Ms Trask said 60 per cent of the entrants were from out of the region and 10 per cent were international competitors.
"I was on the finish line and everyone I spoke to was overwhelmingly positive. Many of the competitors told me they were absolutely blown away by the course, our beautiful scenery and the whole experience," she said.
Ms Trask said many people indicated they would be back again next year.
"One competitor who had competed in over 100 marathons told me that this was the best marathon she had ever competed in. We could not have had a better endorsement."
Ms Trask said planning for next year's event had already started.
