The trial of Papamoa East's designated lifeguard service has been successful, despite weather conditions keeping many beachgoers out of the water.
Papamoa Surf Club director and lifeguard committee member Jim Casey said the temporary patrol ended on a busy note on last weekend, with about 100 beachgoers in the patrolled area on Saturday.
The patrolled area at the eastern end of Papamoa covered 16km. A patrol tower was situated near Taylor's Reserve,.
However, changeable weather conditions kept numbers low throughout the three-week trial. There were no rescues but Mr Casey said that was probably due to relatively calm sea conditions.
"It's been pretty quiet, the sea has had no big surf and the numbers of people in the water haven't been high."
