The Tauranga branch of the Mad Butcher will be closing down this week after going into liquidation.

Shareholders of the meat supply store placed the company into liquidation after several months of poor trading.

This was compounded by the opening of two further supermarkets in Tauranga.

The store, located on the corner 11th Avenue and Norris Street, would stop trading tomorrow at 5pm, unless an urgent buyer for business could be found.

On Monday Tom Rodewald and Paul Manning from BDO Tauranga Ltd were appointed liquidators of the company, Four Investments Limited which was trading as Mad Butcher.

In July the original Mad Butcher store in Mangere also shut down, with the outlet's liquidator attributing its demise to flaws in the chain's business model.

Sir Peter Leitch, the butchery chain's founder, opened the store in the 1970s.

The original store was at least the 10th Mad Butcher store to go into liquidation since October 2012.
