A man has been flown to Tauranga Hospital after his car rolled down a bank in the wider Bay of Plenty.

The 77-year-old man had been travelling in his car at Waiotahi, between Whakatane and Opotiki, about 3.15pm yesterday when the vehicle careered down a bank on Waiotahi Valley Rd.

The man suffered head and abdominal injuries that required immediate hospital care.

The man, who was travelling by himself, was stabilised by St John paramedics at the scene before being flown to Tauranga Hospital by the TECT Trustpower Rescue Helicopter.

The helicopter was called due to the injuries and distance by road to the appropriate hospital.
