5.53pm: A boy knocked off his bike by a car in Maketu has escaped without major injuries.

Initial reports were that the boy was seriously injured but after being checked over by fire fighters and paramedics his injuries have been described as minor.

Maketu fire chief Shane Beech said the boy, who was about 10 years old, had been knocked off his bike after coming out of a driveway.

"He obviously haven't looked," he said.

Earlier: A child has been seriously injured after being hit by a car in Maketu.

Fire service Northern Communications Center shift manager Dallas Ramsay said emergency services were called to the scene on Te Awhe Rd about 5.20pm today.

"A child was struck by a 4x4," she said. "We assisted with first aid and we've left the patient in the care of ambulance staff."

Police were also on the scene.
