New Zealand's national flag and the proposed alternate flag will both be flown from the Elizabeth Street/Takitimu Drive flagpole.

Tauranga City Council said in a written statement that MP Todd Muller had asked Council to consider whether the two flags could take turns being displayed on the city's flagpole.

Tauranga City Council as an organisation has no position on the flag change referendum, it read.

The new flag is being donated by Peter Farmer.

It will be flown from next week, alternating with the current flag as conditions permit until the flag change process reaches a conclusion.
