Black burgers, black milk bottles and black chocolate bars have hit the shelves in Tauranga as Kiwis get behind the All Blacks Rugby World Cup campaign.
Wendy's Hamburgers have introduced their "Gourmet Kiwi Classic on brioche", with buns a subtle shade of black, while Anchor have brought in black milk bottles for their different 2 litre varieties. Meanwhile, Whittaker's have created special edition packaging for their creamy milk chocolate and peanut slabs.
Wendy's chief executive Danielle Lendich said the company had seen trends nationally and internationally and thought the black burger bun would suit their Kiwi classic burger, with the concept taking about a year to perfect.
Activated charcoal was used in the brioche buns to give them their black colour and had apparent health benefits, she said.
Launched last week, sales had been "pretty popular" in Tauranga but not as popular as Rotorua, she said.
