Katikati Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to a shed fire last night and found an alight tractor inside.

A fire northern communications spokesman said the shed on fire was on Kauri Point Rd, north of Katikati, and it was "well involved" when the fire brigade arrived.

A tractor on fire inside the shed was extinguished and its owner towed it out of the shed.

The fire brigade dampened down the hot spots and left.

Also last night, Mount Maunganui Fire Service investigated a smell of gas on Maunganui Rd, which was caused by a gas company purging its lines.
