Bars and restaurants are conducting a balancing act when it comes to serving pregnant women alcohol, says Bay of Plenty and Waikato manager of Hospitality New Zealand Alan Sciascia.
In light of the situation where a pregnant woman was denied being served alcohol at a bar, Mr Sciascia said there is no initial policy when serving pregnant women, however it is more up to what the bartender has been taught in hospitality training.
"Should a pregnant woman be served, legally yes, morally, it's up to whoever you're talking to." said Mr Sciascia
"Most of those people who are serving alcohol are certified, they actually have a certificate and have undergone training.
"As part of that training they talk about the dangers to the fetus and they use this as a benchmark when making a decision.
