A 51-year-old Waihi man was flown to Waikato Hospital today after a hammer fell on his head.

The Tauranga based Trustpower TECT Rescue helicopter was dispatched to Waihi where a local man had become unwell after he was struck by the falling hammer.

The hammer had been sitting on the top step of a ladder when the man moved the ladder causing the hammer to fall and hit him on the head.

Initially, the man felt ok but after half an hour he said he felt unwell.

He was flown to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.
