Western Work Boats has been advised that it will become certified as an approved contractor to inspect and maintain the 499 moorings in Tauranga Harbour, Whakatane and Ohiwa.
Long-term exclusive sole contractor Sea Quest Marine allowed its certification to lapse in December.
Tauranga moorings administrator Donna Guldenhuys, who advised that Sea Quest Marine had let its certification lapse, said the company could reapply.
"But we are currently working with WWB to prioritise moorings requests from boat owners," she said.
Under local bylaws, moorings must be lifted and inspected every two years. They can only be constructed, placed, inspected, repaired and maintained, by a contractor approved by the regional harbourmaster.
