A Waihi woman was allegedly kidnapped, raped and kept captive for a number of days, then raised the alarm after escaping and calling police.

A man in his early 20s, from Katikati, appeared in Hamilton District Court yesterday on multiple charges including rape, kidnap and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Waihi Detective Sergeant Jason Perry said the man was arrested late last week.

Mr Perry would not go into specific details because the matter was now before the courts.

However, the matter was of significant concern, he said.

The woman required hospital treatment but Mr Perry said he could not comment on the nature of her injuries.

He said police were alerted to the alleged incident because she eventually managed to escape and raise the alarm.

The Katikati man was charged with two counts of assault with intent to injure, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, kidnapping, rape and threatening to kill.

The accused and the woman were known to each other.

Mr Perry said police were not looking for anyone else.

The man was in custody. He was expected to appear in court again on Thursday.
