Caution around island
Boaties and fishermen are urged to be extra vigilant around Mayor Island from next week as the annual biological monitoring of the marine reserve takes place.
The monitoring exercise undertaken by the Conservation Department and Bay of Plenty Polytechnic will mean teams of divers will be in the water around the island during the two weeks starting Monday.
Boats from DoC and the Polytechnic will also be doing regular pick-ups and drop-offs at various dive locations. The monitoring will coincide with Tauranga Game Fishing Club's One Base fishing competition.
Flu jabs recommended
New Zealanders most at risk from serious influenza complications are able to get a free immunisation as of yesterday. The flu vaccine is offered free every year to New Zealanders over the age of 65, pregnant women and people with ongoing health conditions such as asthma or heart problems.
