The man who stabbed a Tauranga mother and her daughter to death in their home has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 20 years.
The killer, 24-year-old kiwifruit worker Deepak Nagpal who had been boarding with Mrs Sangha, 32, and her taxi-driver husband Dev Sangha, 37, at the time of the double tragedy was sentenced in the High Court at Rotorua this morning, after pleading guilty to two counts of murder on November 24.
Mr Sangha rushed from the public gallery towards Nagpal but was held back by security.
His wife Ravneet Sangha was stabbed more than 100 times and her 2-year-old daughter Anna stabbed and cut 10 times.
Police discovered Mrs Sangha's bloodied body at the couple's Ngatai Rd, Otumoetai home at 3pm on June 6 - two days after she was killed.
At 11.20am on June 4, Mrs Sangha sent a text message to a close family friend saying she had asked Nagpal to move out over a money matter. Soon after, she was stabbed by Nagpal with six kitchen knives. Bloody footprints on the kitchen floor showed he went back to the kitchen to retrieve more knives during the frenzied attack. Anna's body was not found until mid-morning on June 7. Her body was found in the washing machine.
Mr Sangha was in India on business when the murders occurred.
