One of them is not much bigger than her golf bag and the weather was so cold it was hard to grip the club at times, but the Wanganui girls in the Junior Girls' Interprovincial have been doing their best this week.
Tara Raj, Kyra Garrett and Amber-Rose Newt-Thompson ofCastlecliff are all in the Wanganui/Manawatu team competing against nine other provinces at the Rotorua Golf Club, with Raj and Garrett in their first real taste of representative play.
The team started on Monday with a 3.5-2.5 loss to Auckland but Raj, 10, was a revelation.
She showed amazing grit to bounce back after being 4 down with four holes to play, to win all four of them to halve her match.
Thompson-Newth also won while a nervous Garrett was a little overmatched.
On Tuesday against Canterbury, Newt-Thompson made it two wins while Raj again was nerveless as she came back from 4 down late in her game against a much more experienced competitor to halve the match on the final hole.
Garrett showed improvement on Wednesday against North Harbour but bitterly cold southerly made playing conditions unpleasant for all.
Newt-Thompson and Raj both fought back from deficits in their games but ultimately in the freezing weather could not capitalise on the final holes, as the team lost 5-1.
