You may no longer call Waverley's Jack Lupton the junior of his well-known hydroplane racing family.
The 18-year-old son of former World Grand Prix champion Warwick and younger brother of leading driver Ken, first-season rookie Lupton won the 89th Masport Cup Regatta at Twizel's Lake Ruataniwha at the weekend.
The
event was hosted by the New Brighton club as Cantabrian Raymond Hart was the defending champion.
Driving his father's Canadian-imported GP57, Lupton finished second in the first race on Saturday, then claimed pole and held the lead for the Sunday race to win the cup.
Hart was second overall in The Boss, while Ken Lupton had problems with his Cheetah craft in the first race then came second behind his younger brother in the Sunday race to finish third overall.
