Not just adults enjoy blitzing the bike tracks of the Harakeke Forest's plantation, as the Wanganui Mountain Bike Club hosted nearly 150 children on the tracks last weekend.
It was the final round of the KiwiKids bike series for children from under the age of five to 13 years old,
and the club was delighted with the turnout in sunny conditions of both youngsters and parents.
Youth development officer Nigel McIlroy said it was an ideal finale. "Wanganui Mountain Bike Club hosted KiwKids with the aim of encouraging young boys and girls on to their bikes and to promote cycling as a fun family activity. Racing across all the age groups has been fun and fair with the growth in skills and confidence apparent for all to see."
McIlroy said KiwiKids was the sort of breeding ground that had seen Wanganui cyclists like Sam Blinkinsop, Glen Hayden, Joel Daniel and Sharratt family members go on to represent New Zealand at an elite level.
The club was planning a summer series for kids and families "to build kids skills and confidence of bikes".
