The Harvey Round Motors Wanganui team made an excellent start to the Central Districts Interclub Squash Championships winning the first round 4-0 in Palmerston North on Tuesday.
The annual tournament involves six teams - three from Palmerston North and one each from Tararua, Rangitikei and Wanganui - playing five rounds
and a final.
Wanganui toyed with the Massey Young Guns; first Ant Rountree beat Massey's Taylor Leabourne in four sets - 11-6, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7. Hawera-based Steven Bennett then stepped on court to take on the current New Zealand girls junior champion Rebecca Barnett. Bennett won the match in three sets - 11-6, 12-10, 11-6. Matt Ratcliffe was the next up for Harvey Round Wanganui, and he saw off Danielle Fourie 11-8, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7.
Finally, Wanganui No1 Rod Bannister played Palmerston North top A-grader Tom Nash. The first set was close with Nash claiming it 12-10 before Bannister took control in the next three sets, winning 11-5, 11-4, 11-5.
The next round is at Rangitikei Squash Club on Tuesday from 7pm.
