Wellington College performed a remarkable turnaround to win the men's draw of the Division Two North Island Secondary Schools Softball Championships yesterday.

Hosted at the Wanganui Softball Ballpark, Wellington had been upended in the semifinal by Palmerston North Boys High 10-2.

But on the other side of the draw were the undefeated St Patrick's College, Silverstream which under the rules could not play the final because they were a composite team.

Among the other games, Taradale High had beaten Wanganui High 4-3, leaving the home team to finish fourth overall.

Given another crack at Palmerston North in the final, Wellington College made it count with a close 12-10 win in an excellent contest.

In the women's draw, the final was a battle of the Hawke's Bay as Hastings Girls High School defeated their Napier Girls counterparts 13-3. There had been nothing between the two teams during round robin play.

After a good tournament, Aotea College were the unlucky ones, but lost to Napier Girls in the semifinal 11-0.

Hastings Girls beat Orewa College 10-2 in the other semi.
