In a tense battle of wits, Waverley came from behind to claim its first Dow-Agro Taranaki Handicap Pennants golf title on the Te Ngutu links at Normanby on Sunday.
Playing against New Plymouth's Westown, the morning session proved a shot too far for the Waverley foursome with Guy Lennox andWarren Pope losing 5/4 and Robert Crawford and Kerry Rees going down 6/5. However, Phil Hooper and Robbie Amon came to the rescue with a 5/4 victory over their Westown rivals.
Down 2/1 at lunch and needing to win at least four out of the six afternoon matches to secure the title, Waverley started well with Amon winning 3/1 and Pope winning 3/2.
In the next pairings Rees lost 2/1 and Lennox won 4/3 with Waverley needing just one more win from the last pairing of Hooper and Crawford. Hooper lost 3/2.
Crawford come to the 17th leading one up and, spurred on by a large group of Waverley supporters, clinched a 2/1 win.
