Wanganui High School will have a strong presence at the Taranaki secondary schools sevens tournament in Hawera this weekend.
For the senior boys team, made up of members of this year's successful First XV, the goal is to qualify for the highly regarded Condor sevens in Auckland next month.
Theteam had good success in sevens rugby at the start of the season - coming third in the Hawke's Bay under-23 tournament, while winning the Wanganui Senior B and the Manawatu Secondary Schools Invitational.
As well as the senior boys team, the WHS women's team has reformed and an under-15 boys team will also be taking part in the games on Sunday.
"With new boys in the senior team and sevens relatively new to the women's and younger boys' grade, this tournament may at least give the school a gauge on where it may be for next year's competitions," said coach Darryl Malcolm.
He said only the winner of the senior tournament will make the trip to Auckland, so WHS had to eliminate the highly fancied teams from rugby schools such as New Plymouth Boys' High School and Francis Douglas Memorial College.
