Wanganui react in style to brash call

Wanganui's senior cricket team got a little bit uppity at their Horowhenua/Kapiti hosts during the twilight of Sunday's Hawke Cup game in Paraparaumu.

Having bled 501 runs during the home team's innings, Wanganui's fight for survival ended at 302 all out with only 16 overs left at Kena Kena Park.

While still short of the follow on mark of 400, Wanganui manager Andrew Lock said they were bemused when the home team still asked them to have another bat given there was only a few overs left.

"They were believing they could bowl us out in 16 overs for the outright [win].

"We absolutely took to them."

Max Carroll, who gave another marathon effort in the first innings by carrying his bat to 50 not out, just stayed in his pads and this time went into attack mode, blasting 70.

Brett Cameron (16 not out) and Ben Smith (23 not out) were at the crease when stumps were drawn at 129-3.

The last act of defiance closes a disappointing Hawke Cup campaign for Wanganui, who were competitive at times but only managed a first innings win over Wairarapa in November.

There are negotiations for Wanganui to perhaps have games with Nelson, Wellington and Hamilton before season's end.
