The Wanganui Under 15 Boys' team remain top of their pool with a real chance of making the top eight in the national hockey championship in Christchurch today after a 1-1 draw with co-leaders Thames Valley yesterday.
Both Wanganui and Thames Valley are on four points in Pool D afteryesterday's play, while Waikato sit one point behind on three after whipping the yet to win North Otago side 4-0.
Wanganui take on North Otago today and victory would provide the young lads a royal show of making the top eight. However, a win by Thames Valley over Waikato in pool play today could threaten the chances of the River City side.
Wanganui beat Waikato 2-1 on Monday, while Thames Valley walloped North Otago 6-0 on the same day, a scoreline that could tip the scales in their favour if it comes down to goal differential today.
Wanganui coach Andrew Spence said his boys were a tad disappointed after yesterday's 1-all draw against Thames Valley. Wanganui's goal was scored by Jake Hooper.
"If you asked the boys they'd say they were disappointed. We had most of the possession and most shots at goal, but just couldn't finish it off. There are few that would argue we were easily the better team today and a good win over North Otago in the last pool play game will hopefully propel us into the top eight and we'd be extremely happy with that," Spence said.
