Wanganui come second in play for trophy

Wanganui's indoor bowling team fought hard but came in second place of their zone in their attempt to lift the Paterson Trophy in Feilding yesterday afternoon.

The Zone 3 title was won by North Taranaki with 115.5 points, while Wanganui finished with 69.5.

King Country and Manawatu finished with 63.5 points while Taranaki had 49.

North Taranaki now go on to the Welch Trophy contest in September.

Joining them will be the winners of the other zone finals held at Pukekohe, Gisborne, Titahi Bay, Collingwood in Golden Bay, and Invercargill.

After three-and-a-half sessions out of the five sessions yesterday morning North Taranaki were in the drivers seat with 90.5 points, coming out of the first round fours.

In the afternoon, teams had singles and pairs to complete the fourth session, and then a final session of singles, pairs and fours. North Taranaki win one of the six Paterson Trophies and will be finalists to compete for the Welch Trophy the symbol of inter-district supremacy later in the season.

Wanganui's team: Cary Pinker, Brendon Kenny, Garry Peterson, Sue Hackett, Gavin Scriviner, Craig Scriviner, Les Heywood and Lindsay Bourne.
