The Wanganui Squash Club continued the tradition of winning a regional graded event to qualify for the national squash finals in September.

Playing in the D Grade Regional Championships at the Levin Squash Club last weekend, the Wanganui team overcame the home Levin squad 3-2 to qualify for the final against a very confident and well prepared Hawera team.

With their semifinal tie being 2-2 it came down to the final match where Wanganui's Rui Leitao found himself 0-2 down and looking worse for wear.

His eventual win 3-2 was a real sign of guts and determination especially after being convincingly beaten 3-0 in his first match against Palmerston North.

The final against Hawera on Saturday afternoon came down to the same scenario - a tied situation at 2-2 with Dave Campbell and Paurini Taylor getting the wins for Wanganui.

Again, Leitao had to call on all of his experience from the morning's match to come out on top and win 3-1.

The National finals will be played at the Kawaroa Squash Club in New Plymouth at the end of September.
