The intense competition between Waka crews lifted them to the top placings for the July edition of the Wanganui Rowing Winter Series yesterday afternoon.
After poor weather saw the event postponed last week, Sunday morning conditions were both warm and calm, although only 18 crews took part during the middleweekend of the school holidays, compared to 28 in June.
As there are many different classes and age groups of both rowers and waka competitors, the best overall on the day is decided by "prognostic time".
This involves taking the distance each class will race, then calculating the time they would be expected to reach if racing at international level.
Therefore, because they started at around the same time and pushed each other to the finish line, it was the two team Waka crews who ended up being the best of the bunch.
It was team Wot Paddle listed on the sheet as Daniel Kauika, Sarah Kauika, Eru, Sean, Alex, and Big Dan who finished with a 94.94 per cent prognostic time from 36.53 minutes.
Pick n Mix Anne Kauika, Trevor Kauika , Big Haari Plummridge, Gill Pirikau, Ashley Morgan, and Ray Tyson were second in 38.23s, a 93.05 per cent prognostic time.
From there, it was quite a step back to Porirua's Lucy Rutten, who was third in her GU17 row boat.
