Wanganui Collegiate 1st XV made it two in a row in their national secondary schools season but not without paying the price in Hastings yesterday afternoon.
Playing a very capable Hastings Boys High, Collegiate scored six tries to run out 41-15 winners.
Coach Guy Lennox said with Andre Halbert unavailable,Jack Lupton took over at first-five and was having an excellent match until he suffered a broken leg 10 minutes into the second half.
"He was just in a ruck, it sounds like someone landed awkwardly and fell on it. Just a freak accident."
From a 27-5 advantage at halftime, Lennox said the game lost some structure in the latter stages with both teams putting on their replacements.
Jonty Nesbit scored two tries in a backline that did well.
Collegiate travel to New Plymouth next Saturday to take on Francis Douglas Memorial College.
Lennox was "well aware" the Taranaki team are in good form.
After disposing of Palmerston North Boys High 28-3 in the first week of competition, FDMC beat heated home town rivals New Plymouth Boys' High 24-10 on Wednesday.
The match was played under a cloud after NPBHS principal Michael McMenamin enforced a ban on FDMC students attending the match at the Gully Ground.
The act only served to fire up the visitors for just their fourth victory in the last 12 years of the clash.
