Wanganui will launch a strong attack for the Paterson Trophy at the zone finals this weekend with an in-form team.
Thirty-five districts around the country have entered their top eight players in the competition. All take part in fours, pairs, and singles games.
The six-zone finals are being held atPukekohe, Gisborne, Feilding, Titahi Bay, Collingwood in Golden Bay, and Invercargill. Each winner becomes the holder of one of the six Paterson trophies.
The six winners then play for the premier inter-district competition; the Welch Trophy, in Canterbury in September.
The Wanganui team to compete in Feilding from Friday to Sunday is: Cary Pinker, Brendon Kenny, Garry Peterson, Sue Hackett, Gavin Scriviner, Craig Scriviner, Les Heywood and Lindsay Bourne, with Maria Klitscher named as reserve.
Selector/manager Alton Heaslip said this year's team had a "lot of body and skill" and he was hopeful of a top showing.
"Wanganui has won it once before - eight or 10 years ago from memory. But this year we have a very good team with a great attitude," Heaslip said yesterday. "We had our final practice at the Castlecliff Club on Sunday and I was very happy with the form the team is showing."
