It was their night at the Oscars for Wanganui's leading junior cricketers at a packed Cook Gardens Conference Centre on Saturday night.

The end of year awards dinner, hosted by Dilan Raj, recognised the achievements of Wanganui's best representative players at the Festival of Cricket in January, as well as other tournaments, games and tours throughout the summer.

Both at festival time and throughout the season, many of the provinces' best players had the versatility to fill gaps in sides across the different age grades none better emphasised this than outstanding prospect Jessica Watkin, who took home an arm-full of trophies.

The 14-year-old Central Districts representative, who plays for both the boys and girls sides, picked up awards for three different teams, including sweeping all the major prizes for the girls under-18 squad.

Watkin said she would like to play for the different sides for as long as possible.

"It's not better cricket [in boy's] but you improve more."

Brett Cameron was recognised for an excellent season in both senior and junior cricket.

The opening batsman and wicketkeeper for Marist and Wanganui said his highlight was playing for Central District's under-17 in the national tournament in Canterbury.

"I kind of like it coming down from playing with the men."

Five Wanganui teenagers were spread across the under-17 and under-19 CD teams in January.

Cameron also had a big hand in the Festival of Cricket winning Wanganui under-16 team including a match winning partnership in the final with Watkin.

The Jason Clark-coached under-11s were named Best Team of the Year after they were runnerup in their festival tournament falling four runs short in the final after being previously unbeaten.

Nick Blundell and Henry Collier, who are representing New Zealand under-19 against Australia at Lincoln University, sent a special video tribute to their former coach Martin Inness, who is stepping away from coaching at the end of the season.

Starting with the under-11s, Inness had guided the same core group of youngsters all the way through the grades.
