Seven straight wins in the dying stages of the North Island Chartered Clubs Women's Fours Bowls Championship won a St Johns Club team the consolation trophy.
Two Wanganui teams made their presence felt at the annual North Island Chartered Clubs Women's Fours Bowls Championship in Johnsonville last week.
The Wanganui St Johns Club fielded the largest numbers from the River City, sending four teams to the tournament hosted by the Johnsonville Club.
One of the fourSt Johns Club teams finished third equal in the main section, while another strung seven straight wins together late in the competition to claim the consolation trophy.
The team skipped by Maxine Rowatt and including Gale Fache, Loralie Hawkes and Margaret Waklin bowled well enough to finish third equal to a Tawa RSA foursome in the top section, while skip Viv Bishop helped teammates Pauline Anderson, Ngaire Farrell and Jill Rohloff claim the massive consolation trophy, ironically donated a few years back by the Castlecliff Club.
The Bishop-skipped side knew performances on an incredibly windy day earlier in the week had denied them a chance of qualifying in the top section, but the foursome soon knuckled down to win four matches on day three of the championship to make it into the top eight of the consolation.
"We won another three straight games to win the consolation final and the trophy," Rohloff said.
"It was blowing a real gale earlier in the week and some of the bowls were getting blown around the green even after they had stopped near the kitty. At that stage we thought we were done like a dinner, but to come back and win seven straight matches and the consolation final was brilliant," she said.
Teams from the Wanganui East and Cosmopolitan clubs also competed.
