"We haven't really got a unit together yet with any consistency - it's hard to develop a pattern and gameplan with who we got."
Despite one goal less deficit, Burgess felt the team played better the week before - as in the quicker-paced game TCOB had opportunities they did not take, while they conceded goals due to defensive lapses.
However, it is likely College will be the top team in the competition this year, with the Palmerston North club looking strong across the board of both the men's and women's divisions after attracting good numbers of talent.
"On that basis, we didn't perform badly but there's still a lot of room for improvement," Burgess said.
Given the flow of the match, goal keeper Andrew Thomas had a lot of work to do and despite the sheet against him had a standout game.
"It was all coming at him and he had to pull off some pretty good saves."
The matches this season have switched from 35 minute halves to having four quarters of 17 minutes, which was trialled at masters age group level in 2016.
Training on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Burgess should be able to call on experienced players Craig Ritani and Kane Watkin returning this weekend for the first home game against High School Hockey Club at Gonville Domain.
He said their are two or three other former senior players whose arms he is trying to twist to also have another dig in Division 1.
"We need everyone to come to arms."
The Wanganui women's team will have a similar mantra when their Senior Women's competition begins at Gonville Domain against the HSHC Evergreens on Saturday.
Last year's team - a first-time amalgamation of the TCOB 'Techno' women's team and Collegians - finished runnerup in the Manawatu Women's Division 2, when despite a dominant season they were upset in the final by College Development.
Senior player and Hockey Wanganui chief executive Kylie Penn said this season, the departure of Palmerston North Girls High from Division 1 had severely depleted the ranks, with only three teams left.
Therefore, Divisions 1 and 2 have combined into a 13-team grade, consisting of three pools.
Wanganui are in Pool A with 2016 Division 1 champions College, the Evergreens and Massey B.
After the first round of games, the Top 2 teams from each pool will combine to form a new Division 1, while the remaining teams go into Division 2 with separate playoffs.
Wanganui will be coached again by Colleen Baylis, although she will not be playing due to family commitments.
The side has lost Michelle Mitchell and Lisa Grant, who have transferred down to Kapiti, but Jan Dixon will be coming back after being involved in a gold medal win at the World Masters Games, while fellow veteran Michelle Low will play when she returns from the Trans-Tasman Masters Challenge in Whangarei.
TCOB meet HSHC in the 1.30pm game, while the Wanganui women meet HSHC Evergreens at 3pm.
