Three Wanganui judo exponents fared well in Tauranga at the weekend during a slow build-up to the Auckland International Competition late in the year.
The trio - Aiden Voice, Brierley Watson and Sam Scott-Page - all placed in their various grades when representing the Wanganui Judo Club, now part ofthe Wanganui Martial Arts Centre in Wickstead St.
Coach Wayne Watson singled out young Scott-Page as a standout for the small Wanganui contingent with a second in the over 36kg junior boys class and a third overall in the open weight junior boys.
"Aiden had two thirds - in the cadet men's open and in the over 81kg cadet men's, while Brieley had a second in the over 36kg junior girls," Watson said yesterday.
"Sam did very well and was probably the star of the Wanganui team at the weekend. The next tournament in Palmerston North on June 23 will be a wee bit harder. That's the plan, though. We're trying to build-up slowly before picking a team to go to the Auckland International later in the year. I will see how these three and others compete in Palmerston North before picking the Auckland team," Watson said.
