It is the open class short course sprinters who provides the main chasing action at Hatrick this evening.

The Race 5, 305m dash (6.29pm) features the recently-crowned NZ Sprinter of the Year (up to 399m) in Subic Bay.

This Lisa Ahern-prepared speed merchant has been successfully alternating between the Hatrick Friday and Manukau Sunday meetings.

Subic Bay demolished his Manukau 318m rivals last Sunday, when he scampered to a convincing nine-length victory.

The concern for him this evening is in drawing the six-trap.

He is obviously smart enough to take out this dash, providing he steps away quickly.

However, that wasn't the case last Friday, when he was a tad slow from trap-eight. He rattled home late for his second placing.

Leading Subic Bay home then was John McInerney-trained Vito Baxter, who is again a race rival this evening.

He returned a meet-best 305m time of 17.54s, when delivering his pace-making win. He holds repeat claims here.

A couple of other sprinters to consider for this dash are provided from the Angela Turnwald kennels, especially with both of them drawing the inside two-traps.

Two Up has won three of his four sprints when sighted wearing the red racing vest - he will be decked out in red for this evening's assignment.

Lone Star Lad has struck recent traffic problems, however a swift start from trap-two can see him being required to attend the post-race podium.

The main 520m race this evening is the Race 10 (9.02pm) C2/3 event.

The field contains a pair of downgraded chasers who both contested Group 1 finals last season.

Our Gypsy for Ahern and Cawbourne Clover from the Matt Roberts kennels both hold solid looking stake claims here.

It is likely that the gun greyhounds will be missing from the Hatrick action again next Friday evening, as the New Zealand Cup carnival gets underway at the Addington Raceway at that time with a series of Group 1 heats.

On Thursday evening, 520m heats will be held for New Zealand's richest greyhound race - the $100,000 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup.

The following afternoon sees the short course speed merchants contesting their heats for the $30,000 Fitzgerald Arms Galaxy Sprint over the 295m dash.
