A sporting battle replaced scholastic endeavours at St Johns Hill School yesterday as students fought for a spot at the annual interschool athletics day at Cooks Gardens next Tuesday.
The entire school took part in the St Johns Hill sports day yesterday competing in a variety of athletic disciplines, includingrunning, long and high jumps, throwing and coits.
School sports co-ordinator Glen Howells said events were staged in age groups for 8, 9, 10 and 11-year-olds with the top performers from each grade being selected to represent the school at the Interschool Championships against 15 other primary schools from the city.
"It's a big event at Cooks Gardens each year and the kids really look forward to it. Our own event is also very popular. The best performers are selected for the interschool competition and we usually do very well. We are one of the bigger primary schools, so we have a large pool of athletes to pull from. We did particularly well in the relay events at the interschool last year," Howells said.
Meanwhile, principal Michael Fitzgerald said the school sports day also actively involved the large gathering of parents and supporters. "It's a great community day each year and a lot of fun. We get great support from the parents and the community and we all look forward to the parents' race later in the day - the kids love it."
