So, who were your heroes?

Conduct of our sports stars and how they react to the stresses and circumstances of their fishbowl existence has always been a prickly subject in this mass-media world of ours - as evidenced by both an international and local star taking a step down from the pedestal this week.

By now, you may have seen the admittedly quite funny video of Portuguese footballing great Cristiano Ronaldo, 2015 Ballon d'Or winner (and a runner-up in 2016 to Argentine rival Lionel Messi), deciding the microphone of a CMTV reporter could use a quick wash in a nearby lake.

International media speculated that Ronaldo's decision to grab and dunk the the recording device, which was thrust around two security guards and into his face, was a spat by an ego manic unable to cope with criticisms of his performance in Euro 2016.

However, rather than being a prima-donna, it appears the 31-year-old still has a reasonable grip on his emotions regarding being marked out of the game by the Iceland defenders and then seeing his penalty agonisingly hit the post against Austria.

What annoyed him about this intrusion has to do with Ronaldo's long-standing issues with the CMTV organisation - having sued and won a legal case against them in 2014 after a series of potentially damaging articles about his private life, specifically his son and the child's mother, as well as his deceased father.

As no doubt the quickly disarmed journalist was aware, Ronaldo has boycotted the station since that time, even refusing to answer questions from their reporters during open press conferences.

A fortnight ago I called out the UFC for their attempted physical intimidation and black-balling of journalist Ariel Helwani because he received and reported information they wanted to release themselves a few hours later.

However, that is good journalism practice and the use of true facts by Helwani, whereas one can understand if Ronaldo was justifiably aggrieved about sensationalist tabloids tearing apart his home life with little more than speculation and innuendo.

Nonetheless, there is a time, place and proper method for expressing frustration, and even knowing the background, one should say that the world's greatest player - once described as the "perfect role model" by his Real Madrid employers - should have "thought of the children" and just kept walking.

Of much sadder news are the trials and tribulations of great All Black halfback Byron Kelleher.

The 39-year-old was arrested for alleged destruction and domestic violence on the streets of Toulouse early on Wednesday night, French time, while staggering home from a party with his female partner.

The 57-test veteran has lived a seemingly idealistic existence in France since he retired from the professional code in 2012 - using his celebrity to remain in Toulouse and run his own "Haka Corner" rugby-themed bar.

If drug dealers have an unwritten rule of "don't get high on your own supply", then what can be said about a man with a history of alcohol-related incidents owning a trendy night spot?

As a colleague said in this office on Thursday, "I would have hoped he'd grown out of that by now", referring to the very ugly incident in 2009 where he and then girlfriend Julie Noves, daughter of his Toulouse rugby boss Guy Noves, were in a drunken car crash.

Kelleher, very intoxicated, then assaulted the other driver and was arrested, although not before being knocked out by one of the two passersby who intervened in the brawl.

It's not much harder for a sportsman to blot his copybook than that.

"I got stupidly upset. Especially because of the alcohol and I had false friends who dragged me to do the wrong thing," he said at the time.

"I don't want people from Toulouse to think this is normal and that what happened doesn't affect me."

Now, having allegedly vandalised a door and punched his partner when she tried to restrain him, it's impossible to keep giving Kelleher the benefit of the doubt.

He needs some professional guidance. He has carved out a comfortable living post-career could be in the process of throwing it all away.
