The Wanganui Boys & Girls Gym club had a solid start to their competition season last weekend with North Island placings and national opportunities.

In a press release, administration manager Liz Munroe said they had fantastic results from their trampoline gymnasts who attended that North Island championship in Gisborne.

In their first competition, Reuben Downes and Jonty Thomson placed third together in synchronised trampoline.

"Reuben also went on to claim a third place in both the individual trampoline and double mini disciplines, with Jonty earning a fifth and fourth placing respectively," said Munroe.

Across all gymnastics, Jonathan Maples tried out for the national under-14 development squad in Auckland.

He was selected last year and is hoping for another place on the team this year.

In addition, four of the club's senior WAG (Women's Artistic Gymnastics) attended a four-day training clinic in Napier, which was presented by an assortment of good coaches from around the country, including Wanganui's international coach Vivian Hughan.

"The girls improved their technique and learnt lots of new skills," said Munroe.
