When jockey Hayden Tinsley has a good day at Wanganui, winners usually come in clumps.
A couple of years back he rode six in one day here; yesterday he had three before the day had warmed up.
Two were for David Haworth - Gunman and Skywinger - and the other was on
Pheasant for Guy Lowry.
Of the three, Skywinger (by Keeninsky) was probably the most impressive on debut.
"He's not big, but he's strong and looks to have a bright future. I couldn't believe the price [$4.90] - very nice, thanks," said Haworth.
Tinsley said the galloper didn't really enjoy being on the rails but he kicked strongly to the line.
Hotpot The Knight was an unlucky second, being caught wide and then held up for a run in the home straight. Once clear he rushed home, but couldn't catch the winner.
Pheasant, a half brother to Waverley Cup winner Aintree, will now be rested and return in the spring.
"He's good, but a bit weak. You'll see a much better horse in six months time," said Lowry.
Pheasant held on to win race three comfortably from a fast-finishing Barbara Ann.
Dick Bothwell only had one runner yesterday and she took out the first.
Tigris capped some good form with a date dash to grab Led The Way short of the line.
"She'll just get better and better with more distance," said Bothwell of Tigris.
Stacey Dougan was overjoyed with the effort of Bebe King to win the fourth at his second start.
With Vanessa Johnston up, he rounded up Bagarre in the shadows of the post after travelling sweetly behind the lead.
The race was sponsored by Lisa Latta, who had favourite Lizzie's Girl scratched at the barrier.
Rachael Frost had three runners in race six and she scored at odds with Fleches d'Amour, who gained a lucky run on the rails for Buddy Lammas.
Alysha Collett again showed why she is a jockey of the future with an ice-cool ride on veteran Hakuna Matata in the eighth. She got the old boy through a gap late and they ran down local Dawson Falls, who looked set for his first win in 18 months.
Gold Cape burst through late to land race nine for honeymooning trainer John Wheeler.
