The Wanganui Cycling Club wrapped up the 2014-15 season with the individual time trials and the club championships road race held on consecutive weekends.

The road race was held in very windy conditions last Saturday with nine laps of the 10km Montgomery Rd circuit for the open and veteran men's entries.

Lewis Bunker, 18, rode away from a chasing bunch of strong riders, finishing by himself around 40 seconds clear of the field with Jason Sturzaker second and Adam Gosney third.

Catherine McMurray competed a good seven days after her success at the time trials to win the women's road race.

McMurray and Laurika Hazelhurst broke away on the first lap of five.

Club secretary Cherie Prince said it was great to see Hazelhurst back racing with the club after competing in some ironman competitions recently. "Catherine proved too strong for Laurika and rode away with two laps to go, staying away and finishing well ahead in the end."

"She did this backing up her time-trial win to be the overall women's champion for the club - great effort for a busy mum."

Stacey Hildreth was third, while Prince also singled out Debbie Cain for praise after she wasn't going to race but then entered to support newcomer Paul Goudie.

"Great to see such good comradely support from this club member."

The week before, on March 28, the club held their individual time trial, starting from Anzac Parade.

At 60 years old, veteran Pat Johnstone out-rode cyclists far younger than himself, winning the open section in 58m , 40.97s.

Adrian Pettit was just under 6s behind, followed by Sturzaker another minute back.

McMurray's winning time in the open women's was 38m 6.04s, about 7s ahead of Toni Nesbitt, and then Heather Johnston.

Nine members of the club are going to the 2015 Club Road National Championships, being held April 16-19 around the Hawke's Bay region, starting from Puketapu School.

They are Bunker, Johnstone, Pettit, Sturzaker, Gosney, Steve Cowan, Shaun Hogan, Alan Luff, Rob Manson and Paul Forrest.

The Wanganui club are holding their AGM tomorrow at their club rooms at Cooks Gardens and everyone is welcome.
