Former Wanganui galloper Sea Of Jewels finished second in the richest race in Macau on Sunday night New Zealand time.
The Sea Road-Jewel Of The East four-year-old is still 50 percent owned by Wanganui breeders Nigel and Adaire Auret and is now trained in Macau by former high-profile Hong Kong trainer
Malcolm Thwaites.
"Sea Of Jewels ran second in the $HK2.6 million Macau Derby on Sunday night," Nigel Auret confirmed yesterday.
"It was just his third run in Macau after transferring last year and Malcolm was very happy with the run. "He ran third in the derby trial at his second outing and fourth on debut over there. The track surface was good ? just the way he likes it.
"Apparently he had a lovely run behind the leaders and was beaten a length and a quarter by a better horse on the night."
The magnificent looking jet black athletic Australian-bred son of Sea Road was an $A11,000 buy at the 2002 Gold Coast thoroughbred sale and in just one 10-race campaign from Auret's Wanganui stable racked up six wins, three seconds and a fourth for just under $80,000 in stakes.
Ironically, Sea Of Jewels was beaten by another Macau-based Australian-bred, Doppio, a son of Umatilla.
