It got brutal, and that's just how Wanganui-born boxer Robert Berridge likes it.

The 29-year-old earned a TKO stoppage over Australian Kerry Foley in the 10th round of their rematch at Sydney's Horden Pavilion on Wednesday night.

Retaining his Pan Asian belt, "the butcher" put a ripping body shot into the 26-year-old Foley's ribs, breaking one, which put him down to a knee and prompted the referee to call the fight at the same time his cornerman was coming up to throw in the towel.

Moments before the final Berridge barrage, Foley threw a punch to the tough Kiwi's head and grimaced in pain, as it was later revealed to have broken his hand.

After the controversial draw in their 2011 clash, a six round affair, Berridge was confident he could wear Foley out by dragging him into a longer slugfest.

It was similar tactics to his victory over Daniel MacKinnon in November and just like in that fight he had to rise off the canvas to inflict the killer blow.

While scoring well in the early rounds, Berridge was put down by a good straight punch from Foley in the sixth, although he showed no signs of damage and took the eight-count.

Galvanised, Berridge knocked Foley down himself in the seventh and after that the Aussie began to tire.

Tensions threatened to explode when Foley slugged Berridge with two shots after the bell, prompting Berridge and his furious cornermen to demand a disqualification.

But with the Aussie breaking two bones in the space of a minute in the tenth, he had nothing left to give.

"I knew if it went deep into the later rounds I was going to get him, that's where I like it," Berridge said in the dressing room to gathered media after the fight.

"He's only been fighting MMA, hasn't been in the boxing ring, so he's never fought 12 rounds before.

"I could see him gassing, and it looks like I'm gassing as I always breathe with my mouth open, but I got him in the end though."

His promoters Duco Events announced on their Facebook page that Berridge has a deal with a mate who is a tattooist that he gets a free tattoo when he breaks his opponent's ribs, so their charge will expect some new ink.

Berridge's record moves to 23-1-1 with 19 knockouts.
