Nascar racing they call it the 'Have at it, boys' philosophy where drivers keep the power in their hands to settle matters out on the track.

That unwritten rule bears similar credence to the edict handed down by the Wanganui Rugby Football Union this week for Taihape and Wanganui Car Centre Kaierau, as they both prepare for massive games in Waverley and the Country Club respectively.

Holding off on deciding whether to play or cancel the rain postponed match between the two clubs, it will be based on upcoming performances if the fixture will prove necessary, meaning they keep their fates under their own control for now.

If both teams, along with Marton, win or lose after the same fashion for the next few weeks then we may forget the whole thing.

But if one, specifically Kaierau, can claw out some results then sudden death playoff rugby may come to the Wanganui Premier competition a little earlier than August 3.

Preparing to face a Pirates team smarting from their defeat up in Ohakune last weekend, Kaierau co-coach Keith Savell said they have to keep following their second round plans so the circumstances leading into last Saturday, before the washout, stay firmly on the table.

"It's the same for Taihape if they drop a couple of games they'll want to play it as well.

"You've got to pick up those points.

"Nothing's really changed but apart from when the Taihape game got called off, you've got to win those games you can."

Having had an unscheduled break, Kaierau is welcoming back some important faces from injury, namely Wanganui Heartland squad members Areta Lama (first-five) and halfback Josh Edwards, while midfielder Jordan Farrington is also back on the scene.

Lock Sam Lane, Premier's only deaf player, is out with injury.

Kaierau can take confidence from their 12-5 upset of Pirates on Spriggens Park on April 27, although Savell acknowledges that was the loss which saw their neighbour club begin to buck up their ideas.

"The Pirates team, probably to be fair, are a better side than what they were when we played them. At game time we'll know."

It's a similar mindset over in the Taihape camp as they prepare for the daunting task of taking four points off Border in Waverley, something no one has done in 2013.

"It could get a bit tricky if Kaierau have a few more wins and we don't," said manager Anthony Martin.

"You never know, it's 'on the day' stuff with our boys. It's who turns up."

They will also have the use of their representative players with Tremaine Gilbert looking for a big game out wide to assist leading tryscorer Jaye Flaws and vital goal kicker Luke Whale.

Carrying a negative points differential (-31) despite holding fourth spot, with only 26 tries scored for the season Taihape need to make every point count against a Border team (38 tries) who can shut the momentum down if need be.

In the other games this Saturday, the Ruapehu express rolls into Spriggens Park as the team with 14 current Wanganui squad reps, including the entire forward pack, takes on a Marist team desperate to avoid another humiliation like the 83-7 flogging on April 27.

Marton will want to repeat their 13-0 triumph in the last sub-union derby fixture when they travel to the Pa to face Ratana.
