- In sprinting there is clearly some young raw talent developing at WHS.
Lexi Maples impressed in the junior 100m but had to take second to her WHS team mate Millie Manning in the 200m.
In the boys junior 100m Trey Willis-Croft (WHS) held off the challenge of team mate Matt Kiensmith but in 200m he was defeated by Jimmy Duncan (WCS), also winner of the 300m.
Duncan's 300m was very impressive, running an outstanding 40.00 that would have given him a podium finish at last year's North Island Schools Championships.
In the intermediate grades the sprinting honours were shared Ella Duxfield (Cullinane) won over 200m with Jesse Kemp (City College) taking the boys 200m.
The intermediate 100m events were taken by Vilimoni Koroi (WHS) for the boys and Romata Blackburn (WHS) holding out the late challenge of Roimata Hipango (WCS) in the girls. Earlier in the day, Hipango won the both the long and triple jumps with personal best performances.
In the senior boys, the in-form William Smart held off the strong challenge of Brendan Berquist (Rangitikei). Berquist won both heats and set the challenge for the finals. However, Smart prevailed with his second best ever 100m 11.06 seconds and a good 200m (22.54).
Sarah Mcdonald (WHS) won the senior 200m while Ally Bennet (WHS) took out the junior girls 300m.
The other longer sprints were won by Collegiate athletes Kitty Clearey and Tim Mckenzie in the intermediate grade over 400m, while Jonty Nesbitt took the senior boys.
- In the throws Trevor Owens (Rangitikei) won both the senior discus and shot put with strong performances, while New Zealand Schools junior medal winner Jess Brougham (WCS) achieved the same double in the intermediate girls.
Shayden Tipu (WGC) threw the javelin out to nearly 30m in the intermediate girls grade to confirm her potential, as Daniel Kauika (WHS) and Opetini Dryden showed promise in winning their respective junior and intermediate grades.
Both won other events at the meeting Kauika taking the intermediate triple jump and Dryden the junior hurdles.
- In jumps, Kelly Davenport (Nga Tawa) won both the senior triple and long jumps, the latter after a close battle with Pavinee Watson (WCS) where both set personal bests. Davenport also won the senior girls hurdles.
Caleb Bensemann (WCS) won the senior triple jump by a wide margin but lost out to sprinter Brendan Berquist (Rangitikei) in the long jump.
Shae Simon (WHS) looked good in the junior grades winning both the long and high jumps, the latter with a good 1.60m leap.
Jesse Theobold (Taihape) reached an excellent 6m in the intermediate long jump to confirm his promise. He also made 1.60m in high jump but lost on countback from Harry Duncan (WCS).
The other jumps winners were Cassie Elwood (WCS) and Joseph Redpath (WHS) in the respective junior girls and boys triple jumps.
Previously mentioned Manning (WHS) took the junior girls long jump with Jessica Pease (Nga Tawa) and Kartjana Anderson (WCS) taking the junior and intermediate high jumps. Pease also won the 70m hurdles.
- In other hurdle races, Myah Jex-Blake (WCS) in intermediate girls, Charlie McCartin (WCS) for senior boys and Cullen Cornaga (WHS) in intermediate boys (WHS) all showed potential and class.
There were disappointingly small fields in the middle distance events but there was also quality amongst them.
Naomi Craig (WHS) excelled in winning the 800m at intermediate level while Luke Gemmell (WCS) performed the same feat in the junior boys.
Geordie Beamish (WCS) had to work hard for his senior 800m win and came tantalisingly close to setting his first sub 2 minute time.
Triathlete James Wright (WHS) proved too strong for the others in the intermediate boys 1500m.
Ruby Redmayne (WCS) and Emma Rainey (WCS) shared the junior distance events.
Tim McKenzie (WCS) prevailed over Riley Culver (WHS) in 800m as both recorded personal bests in an epic battle.
Alice Bird and Dan Caldwell (both WCS) won their respective 3000m events.-->
