Matt Burke Engineering Marton Saracens captain Dominic Rayner has two hats to wear these days, and under one of them he was not happy at Springvale Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The good news was his Marton team had got a comprehensive nine-wicket win over Bayers Marist to begin their Porter Hire Premier 1 one-day campaign.

The bad news is that, as the Active Physio Wanganui coach, he wants club games with a lot more competitive player depth on show.

With veterans like Mark Fraser away and Brett Turner only playing select matches, the Labour weekend holidays also saw the absence of the handful of Wanganui Collegiate players turning out for Marist in the first half of the summer and it left the remaining young men in green with simply no firepower.

They slumped to 108 all out, with only Wanganui representative batsman Brett Cameron able to show any resistance at the top of the order with 41.

Sending down his fast-mediums, Saracens' Dane Slako had 3-36 from his 10 overs, while Bryant Galpin finished with figures of 2-14 off eight.

The rest of the spoils were spread around the attack.

"When we got through the first three of them, the rest just fell," said Slako on their performance.

Rayner agreed it was a shame.

"They've got no one to bat with. We were keen for a game, but never mind."

Saracens had it all wrapped up in 16 overs as veteran James Linklater smacked a quickfire 57, slamming a boundary and a couple of sixes as he brought up his half-ton.

Sam O'Leary (1-8 from four overs) managed to get a little consolation for the beleaguered Marist attack when he bowled Linklater, but at 81-1 after 13 overs it was going to be a short afternoon.

Loose bowling didn't help as Hamish Harding just picked up where Linklater left off, flicking some very poor deliveries off his pads to the boundary line and finishing unbeaten on 31.

Across the field at Springvale Park, St Johns Tech's inexperience told in their run chase as they got stranded on 169-7 in pursuit of defending champions Property Brokers United's gettable 184-9.

United's fortunes rested on the shoulders of their key batsmen as Tom Lance with 97 was supported by Max Carroll's 48, with no one else reaching double figures.

Bowling what he joked were his "express pace" mediums, Kane Watkins picked up four wickets through the innings, while English import Paul O'Callaghan was hard to get away with 3-16 from 10 overs.

Still missing four players not back from university, Tech made some interesting experiments as true lower-order batsman Trent Hemi pulled a Martin Snedden, circa the mid-1980s, when he padded up to open with Tyler Lock.

It appeared a master stroke as the pair scored slowly but steadily in the windy conditions, reaching 66-0 after 16 overs, although their cause was aided by the large number of wides as United's bowlers struggled for rhythm.

However, Hemi was trapped by Lance's spinners in front for an LBW on 18, then Lock skied a straight-forward catch going for a sweep to leave them 68-2.

Year 12 student Andrew Mackintosh had come up to men's level and finished unbeaten on 24 yet could not score at a rate quick enough as the overs ran out, while joining him was Jessica Watkin the multi-talented cricketer for boys and girls youth teams also making the step up to senior men's grade.

During United's innings the young lady had also handled the gloves when Kane Watkins was bowling and finished with three catches two behind the stumps and one in the field.

United's best bowler was Robbie Power who took 4-27 from his 10 overs, while Lance was likewise difficult to get away, taking 2-23 from his full quota.
