The hunt is on again for the fastest kid on the block in Wanganui.

Wanganui athletics guru Alec McNab said the success of last year's event made a repeat this month a simple decision.

"Is there a budding sports star living in your suburb? There are young and talented stars everywhere just waiting to be discovered. There could well be a superstar like Usain Bolt living in your city block," McNab said.

"The successful Fastest Kid on the Block [FKOB] run in conjunction with last year's Cooks Gardens Classic is being enhanced this year. Last year more than 100 children were involved and it is hoped for a significant increase this year."

There are four qualifying events to be held next week in four different suburbs with the leading athletes invited to compete in the evening programme at the Cooks Gardens Classic on the holiday Monday (Wellington Anniversary, January 20).
