There were 156 gymnasts from nine clubs thinking about a future on the national stage at the Wanganui Open Artistic Championships at the weekend, with four locals making that a reality.

The open championships were held at the Boys & Girls Gym Club inside Springvale Stadium, with 106 female competitors taking part on four apparatus on Saturday, followed by 40 males on six apparatus the following day.

The Male Level 4 and Female Step 5-and-over gymnasts compete to achieve high enough scores to qualify for the closely contested places in the Wanganui team to go to the national championships, being held in Napier this October.

Millie Manning, Genna Maples, Jesse De Vincentis and Jonathan Maples all put their hand up for that trip with their weekend efforts.

In total, between gymnasts, coaches and supporters, there were over 300 visitors attending the weekend, which was a great success in helping to raise funds for those off to the nationals.
