The Whanganui Boxon are dismayed that a recount of their results has seen their June 29 default loss cost them a spot in the Manawatu league premier playoffs today.

Instead, the Boxon will now play the senior final in Palmerston North next weekend against Levin.

Boxon thought that despite their 34-12 loss to Kia Ora last Saturday they had still clung to third spot on the premier table to play second-placed Linton this weekend.

"There was a bit of confusion last weekend because we lost, we got relegated to fourth," said disappointed coach Stewart Reweti.

"It was Manawatu league [decision], they had to have a recount."

Reweti said their default on June 29 against the Whiti Te Ra Brothers had proven more costly than they had thought and left them five competition points in arrears.

"We didn't do ourselves any favours. Mind you, I didn't have a team to go down with."

Therefore, Kia Ora will now play Linton today, with the winner going on to the grand final next weekend against Whiti Te Ra.

Reweti had to tell his team the bad news at their pool session this week.

"They were pretty downhearted. We've got to pick our chin up and go down there. We are in a final."

Under the rules, as the fourth-placed team from Premier, Boxon automatically go through to the senior grand final.

The Dannevirke Tigers were supposed to meet Levin this weekend for a senior semifinal, but the injury-hit Tigers have been struggling with numbers since June and have defaulted the match.

Reweti said they needed to reset their goals towards winning the club's first senior championship.

This year, Boxon had focused on trying to make the Premier grade for the first time in their second year of existence when the nine-team competition split after the first round. Reweti said winning the senior title would still be a step up on their debut season.

"We bombed out, made the [senior] semis and lost to Kia Ora, who went on to win the thing."

He hoped that for next year, now people knew rugby league was alive and well in Wanganui once more, the club might be able to pick up some sponsors, while also getting a competition draw that allowed for more home games.
