TURAKINA horseman Kevin Myers is poised to dominate the action at the opening day of the Central Districts jumping season at Whanganui on Sunday.
Myers has no less than 14 runners accepted for the four jumps races carded on the 10-race Wanganui Jockey Club programme. The jumping maestro has fiverunners in the maiden steeplechase, one in the restricted open steeple, six of the seven entered in the maiden hurdle and two in the restricted hurdle.
While Myers is well-known and respected throughout the world as a master trainer of jumpers, he is certainly no slug with flat runners.
He sits in sixth spot on the nation's 2015/2016 trainers premiership with 50 winners and leads the jumping trainers premiership with nine victories, six clear of his nearest rivals John Wheeler and Brian and Shane Anderton tied on three.
While Sunday marks the start of the CD jumping season, the national season opened yesterday at the Riverton meeting in the deep south where Myers saddled up four horses. The Northern season opens at the Waikato meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday.
The WJC was set to host an eight-race card on Sunday, but the sheer weight of numbers prompted the addition of two extra jumps races. They make up the first four races on the card starting at 11.35am, while the final flat event is scheduled to run at 4.31pm.
WJC operations manager Bret Field said a special Mother's Day luncheon will be held in the sponsor's room and families keen to celebrate the day should RSVP by the end of business today.
"The Mother's Day luncheon is proving pretty popular with 70 already registered, but we need to know by Thursday afternoon if more people are keen to come. We have activities for kids as well, including a free bouncy castle," Field said.
