Wanganui and Rangitikei teams are in the middle and tailend of the pack after pool play in the New Zealand Secondary Schools girls' football tournament for the Maurice Hulme Trophy at Wembley Park.

The Wanganui High School (WHS) girls take to the field today playing off for eighth to 16th as does Nga Tawa Doicesan School, while Wanganui Girls College (WGC) languish in the bottom section playing for 17th to 21st.

After three days of play the top four of the 21 teams competing from throughout the North Island will begin quarter-finals this morning aiming to secure a semifinal berth and the chance to make the finals tomorrow.

Four teams have gone through unbeaten, including Pakuranga College, Wairarapa College, Sacred Heart College (Wellington) and Otumoetai from Tauranga, which had a draw earlier in the week.

Today, WHS take on Taupo Nui-a-tai in an effort to finish the top bracket of the 8-16 group. WGC has a bye tomorrow morning, so much will depend on the outcome of this afternoon's match to determine the final berth.

Yesterday WHS drew 1-1 with Bethlehem College from Tauranga, while WGC went down 3-0 to Onslow College and Nga Tawa had a 5-0 loss from Taupo Nui-a-tai.

Meanwhile, Wanganui boys teams at different tournaments are also not in the hunt for semifinal spots in their respective events.

Wanganui Collegiate, playing in Papamoa, and the Wanganui High School lads playing in Palmerston North, are in the middle of their respective 24-strong packs with more matches today.
